Washington DC Photo Gallery: White House
May 2003

The construction of the White House, or the "President's House" as it was originally known, began in 1792. The first President to occupy the building was John Adams in 1800. Even though the building that was finally constructed was only one-fourth the size originally planned, the White House was still the largest house in the United States until after the Civil War.

The Eisenhower Executive Office Building, located just to the west of the White House. It was built from 1871 to 1888, and originally housed the Departments of State, War, and Navy. The architecture is considered to be one of the best examples of French Second Empire design in the United States.
