Congreess authroized spending for the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in 1911. Groundbreaking for the memorial took place on February 12, 1914, the 105th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. It was dedicated on May 30, 1922, by President Warren Harding.

With its design based upon the Pantheon in Greece, the Lincoln Memorial anchors the west end of the National Mall.

The inscription behind Lincoln's statue reads: "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."
