Washington DC Photo Gallery: Reagan Washington National Airport
June 2000

Ground was broken for National Airport in November of 1938, and it opened for service in December of 1941. The the Colonial and Neoclassical architectural elements were an intentional part of the airport's design, an attempt to better integrate the airport into the architectural picture of the Capital City.

The arrival and departures gates can offer visitors to Washington their first, or last, views of some of the city's landmarks. Here is a view of the Capitol Dome from one of the gate areas.
